Transport Manager matching FAQs

Plain-English answers for operators and CPC holders considering the TM Match service.

Can TM Match guarantee that a Transport Manager will be approved?

No. We can help identify and introduce potentially suitable Transport Managers. The operator must make the appropriate application and the relevant Traffic Commissioner decides whether a nominated Transport Manager is approved.

How quickly can you find someone?

Urgent enquiries are prioritised, but availability depends on location, licence type, fleet size, capacity and the experience required. We do not promise a guaranteed placement time.

What if our current Transport Manager has already left?

Tell us immediately in the operator form. We will capture the leaving date and whether a Period of Grace has been requested. You may also need operator-licence advice about notifications and the replacement process.

What is a Period of Grace?

In some circumstances a Traffic Commissioner may allow an operator a limited period to regain professional competence after losing a Transport Manager. It is discretionary, not automatic, and the operator should act promptly.

Does a Standard National or Standard International licence need a Transport Manager?

Standard National and Standard International goods vehicle operator licences require professional competence. A Restricted goods vehicle licence does not normally require a Transport Manager, so if you are unsure which licence you need, submit the enquiry and we can help you identify the correct route.

How many operators can an external Transport Manager work for?

The general statutory ceiling is up to four operators and a combined maximum of 50 vehicles for external TM work. A lower practical or regulatory limit can apply depending on circumstances, and effective and continuous management remains essential.

Do you accept newly qualified Transport Managers?

Yes. We clearly distinguish between qualification and practical experience. Newly qualified CPC holders can register, but higher-risk or more demanding operators may require someone with established experience.

Do operators contract with TM Match or the Transport Manager?

The precise commercial arrangement will be confirmed before any introduction or placement is progressed. Unless specifically agreed otherwise, an introduction does not itself create a contract for statutory Transport Manager services.

Can JS Transport Solutions help with more than the introduction?

Yes. JS Transport Solutions separately provides operator-licence applications, compliance audits, external TM services, training and remedial compliance support. Any additional service will be explained and agreed separately.
